Stainless Steel Helix Staircase
LOCATION: Park Avenue, New York
DESIGN: Helix staircase with lateral stainless steel stringer and balusters, steam-bent birch handrail, and maple treads
Constructed and designed by Serett this grand helix staircase is the focal point of this Park Avenue Apartment. The helix is fabricated from stainless steel components with a satin nickel finish and a steam bent, custom formed mahogany handrail. The handrail twists and rolls as it follows along the top guardrail and down the extreme curve of the helix stringer.
A challenge faced by Serett during the design process was the constraints posed by the existing apartment. Due to a small elevator and a lack of access the entire staircase was constructed modularly. All components were built off site and assembled on location. A small metal shop was set up in the apartment during the three week installation.
